Sport plays a very important role in the daily programme for every St Hugh’s pupil. We believe that providing quality and varied sporting opportunities is a key part of school life; for general skills, health and fitness but also for the fun and sportsmanship that active participation and successful competition can bring. The emphasis is placed on enjoyment as much as sporting excellence and success.
The timetable allows boys and girls to be involved in Physical Education or Games 5 to 6 times a week. The main fixture day is Wednesday. There are occasional tournaments and special match opportunities on a Saturday. In the Summer Term Athletics meets, Swimming Galas, Cricket and Tennis matches may be held throughout the week.
Children in Year 3 are gradually introduced to playing competitive sport in friendly tournaments with schools of a similar size. This provides an opportunity for teams to play in mixed ability teams without too much emphasis on the final result. Sport becomes slightly more competitive in Year 4 with the number of fixtures increasing. This continues throughout the school up to senior level which includes a comprehensive fixture list across all sports including a number of highly competitive tournaments and matches.
All children regularly compete in teams, encouraging the development of all abilities, not just the most able. However, we are fully committed to challenging and developing our most gifted sports boys and girls with excellent professional coaching and encouraging links to our wide-ranging list of nearby sports clubs.
